Karen
Few athletes can say they won 200 medals in their lifetime. Karen, however, is an exception.
Between tennis, snow skiing, and basketball, Karen has won 200 medals in local, national, and international Special Olympics games since she came to Community Living in 1983.
In the process, she has traveled from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina to Dublin, Ireland, bringing national and international recognition to Community Living. She even carried the torch at a regional Special Olympics competition.
Karen says the best part about Community Living's Recreation Services program is the opportunity to meet people. "I like being around people," says Karen. "I have made lots of friends in the program." In fact, Karen met her roommate through Recreation Services over 15 years ago.
Even after she puts away her racquet, skis, and basketball, Karen doesn't slow down. In addition to sports, Karen works full time at a local hotel, serves as Secretary of the Kiwanis Aktion Club, and is a member of Community Living's Recreation Advisory Board.
